I've
started listening to Summer songs this week, because it feels right. I know
it's still, really, a Spring month, and I know we're less than weeks removed
from bitter Winter weather, and I know SpringWatch has only just started on
telly, but it still feels right. Temps in the late twenties, the heat barely
dissipating at night, sleeping with the windows open, a slight feeling of
sunburn. All these things have combined to make me feel as if I've either a)
gone abroad on holiday without realising it, or b) been fast-forwarded through
a couple of months and dumped in the end of July. So - Summer songs it is. And
they are landing very, very well. My playlist mostly bypasses the classic,
obvious numbers and concentrates more on tunes that remind me of specific times
in Summers past, or have a certain vibe to them that seems to match the weather.
'Give It Up' by KC and the Sunshine Band, for example, which has no mention of
a particular time of year in its lyrics, but absolutely screams 'late Summer
evening' when I hear it. And I've heard it a lot this week!
It's great how this stuff feeds itself, exponentially. It's warm, so I feel
warmer, so I feel better, so I play warm music, which makes me feel more
Summery, which makes me feel better, which makes me more inclined to go outside
in the sun, which warms my body, which lifts my mood, which makes me play
faster songs, which cheers me up further, which means I can enjoy the change in
climate more, which provokes me to choose a playlist that accentuates the
brightness, which lifts me higher...
And so on, and so forth.
And my last couple of lines there has made me think of Jackie Wilson's song
"Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher" which itself is a Summer-style
banger, and needs to be added to my collection, like NOW!
